CBD is short for Cannabidiol. It’s a chemical compound which is found in the hemp plant called a cannabinoid. Hemp contains over 100 different identified cannabinoids. CBD and THC are the most popular and prevalent. Cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system of the human body.
Our CBD is extracted from one of the primary species of cannabis called hemp. Hemp is distinguished from marijuana by the fact that it must have less than .3% (that is, less than one third of one percent) THC content. Traditionally, hemp has been grown to product a variety of textiles.
Is it legal to sell hemp-derived products?
Yes, though it depends on the state. The 2018 Farm Bill officially classified hemp as an approved agricultural crop. Hemp-derived products with less than .3% THC were removed from the US Government’s Schedule 1 controlled substance status. Although this is the case federally, each state has its own laws and regulations that both buyers and sellers of CBD must follow. Please research your local state laws regarding CBD and whether or not it is legal to purchase in your area.
What is the Endocannabinoid System?
The endocannabinoid system is a connected group of cannabinoid receptors that are located in the brain and the nervous system. There are two primary receptor types, CB1 and CB2, that are involved in a variety of physiological and cognitive functions.
Will I get ‘high’ on CBD products?
While CBD is derived from the same source as marijuana, industrial hemp must contain less than .3% THC to be allowed for sale. Since THC is the pyschoactive ingredient that gives users of marijuana a “high”, there exists only trace amounts of THC in full-spectrum brands of THC, and no THC in isolate versions. Put simply, the quantity of THC that can be found in industrial hemp is far too low to produce the same effect as marijuana.
Is there THC in Utopius products?
In some cases, yes. We provide a variety of options for CBD users, such as full-spectrum CBD (which can contain trace amounts of THC), or CBD Isolate (which will have no detectable amount of THC). For more information on THC content, you should refer to the 3rd party lab results containing detailed information on the THC potency of the product in consideration. Under no circumstances will that amount be greater than the allowed, legal standard of .3%.
Can I fail a drug test if I use only CBD products?
Although the ingredients of our full-spectrum products are within the legal requirements, they can cause you to fail a drug screening due to the granularity of certain drug-screening procedures. If you are expecting to be subjected to upcoming drug screenings for your work, athletics, or other positions, but would still like to experience and enjoy the benefits of CBD, then we recommend our CBD Isolate products which contain no detectable THC. Everyone should use caution with products containing CBD if the usage may conflict with the expectations of their employers or equivalent.
Due to FDA regulations, we cannot make claims regarding the effectiveness of CBD when it comes to certain conditions. The study of CBD is an ongoing and active pursuit by numerous scientific bodies in an effort to both better understand the plant we call Cannabis, and to determine what effectiveness things like CBD and THC may have for various types of conditions. We here at Utopius and many around the world are anticipating more information regarding this in the near future, and will share these details as they become available with our customers. What we can say, however, is that Hemp has been cultivated and used for hundreds of years in the US and much has already been written about its effects on health with regard to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We encourage our customers and everyone else to do their own research or to consult with a medical professional before starting a new health regimen whether that includes CBD or not.
Is it normal for my CBD oil to smell like marijuana?
In actuality, both marijuana and CBD share a particularly strong and earthy fragrance thanks to terpenes. CBD isolate generally removes this flavor and smell, but many processes add the terpenes right back in, which in effect keeps the CBD both more natural and flavorful. In short, yes, it is normal to experience that earthy aroma while using CBD, and moreover, it’s important that you do: this smell and taste is kind of like a fingerprint of authenticity. If you don’t smell or taste it, that could mean you are using a particular isolate of CBD, or the producer of your CBD is mixing or diluting your CBD.
